Computer FAQs
Understand computer related geek-speak(This page is intended for those who are new to computers or who would like to know a little about the “goings-on” in their PC. It offers only very basic information and concepts.)
CPU’s, RAM and hard drives - what they are and how they work together Click on the image to enlarge it.
Motherboard: All the PC components are fitted onto this board. It enables all the components to communicate with each other.
Modem: This is a component that allows you to connect to the internet and some models enable you to send faxes from your PC as well.
VGA card / video card: This component communicates with your screen and enables it to display graphics. The better the video card, the better the quality of the graphics displayed on the screen – a very important consideration for gamers!
Sound card: This enables you to play sound through your PC speakers, hi-fi or headphones.
USB port: Universal Serial Bus port. This is used to connect peripherals like memory sticks, digital cameras etc to your PC.
Serial port: This is also used to connect peripherals to a PC. However, it is older technology and new computers tend to use USB.
AGP: Advanced Graphics Port. This is used for advanced graphics cards. It is an essential consideration for gamers!
PCI: Peripheral Component Interface. This is used for all your add-on component cards such as internal modems, network cards, sound cards, TV-capture cards etc.
On board: This means that all the essential components come with the motherboard. You can upgrade the 3D rendering and graphics capability of such a system if the motherboard has an AGP slot. You can upgrade other aspects of the system (like the sound card, for example) if the motherboard has PCI slots. (If you’ll want to upgrade at any stage, look for a motherboard that has at least 3 PCI slots.)
Memory sizes1 bit (The very smallest chunk of data that you can get.)
1 byte = 8 bits (This is approximately the data size of one text letter e.g. P.)
1 kilobyte =1024 bytes
1 megabyte= 1024 (Megabyte is usually the size that RAM is measured in.)
1 gigabyte = 1024 megabyte (Gigabyte is usually the size that hard drives are measured in.)
1 terabyte = 1024 gigabytes (This is a huge amount of memory – generally only used in servers.)
1 petabyte =1024 terabytes (No-one has managed to build a single hard drive that can hold this amount of data – yet!)
These sizes apply mostly to RAM - hard drive manufacturers tend to measure their sizes as 1000 kilobytes being 1 megabyte and 1000 megabytes being 1 gigabyte.
